EDNA
Reading Program (for
Grades K - 3)
EDNA is an outstanding early intervention
reading program
that identifies and accelerates at-risk readers during their primary
years. Based on a set of strategic, flexible learning fundamentals, EDNA
produces near-perfect results – 98% of all the children will be reading
at their grade placement by the time they leave third grade.
It is important to understand that reading failure
occurs not due to deficiencies in these children, but rather because the
programs fail to address specific roadblocks inherent in these children.
The EDNA technique is specifically designed for this group of at-risk
readers in grades K through 3. It is a supplemental instructional
reading program and is not intended to replace your schools current
program.
All programs provided by Teach Them To
Read are Research Based Programs as identified by the
Report of
the National Reading Panel.
The EDNA reading program has also been used successfully
in After Hours and Summer School Programs.
The EDNA Reading Program
Features:
Routine
diagnostic procedures and trained teacher observation which help
identify emergent, at-risk readers at the beginning of the Kindergarten
year (or later, if necessary).
A
custom-designed program for each school, rather than the more
traditional "cookie-cutter" approach found in other programs.
A flexible
structure that will fit into the existing organization of your school.

Different implementation options. While it is recommended that EDNA be
completely implemented at the same time for all teachers in Kindergarten
through third grade, the program can also be implemented one grade level
at a time.
Comprehensive
and effective teacher training. Teacher training guarantees that every
instructor will be able to successfully teach the EDNA program to
at-risk readers.
Ongoing teacher
evaluation and a plan to monitor students’ progress and to make
adjustments in instruction.
All materials
needed to teach the program for the entire school year.
A user-friendly
approach for quick and easy implementation by teachers. Implementation
of the EDNA program is achieved with an organizational system comprised
of a series of numbered containers that hold all of the necessary
materials needed to teach the program.
Proven,
effective alternate methods of instruction perfected by reading
specialist Edna Goble. With over 25 years experience as an educator,
administrator and reading specialist, Edna understands the dynamics of
reading failure. She has worked with thousands of former at-risk readers
to successfully put " reading within reach." A dynamic speaker and
effective teacher, Edna is a frequent presenter at state and national
education conferences.
T eacher
Training and Materials
Teacher training is one of the most
important components of the EDNA reading program. Through an ongoing staff
development program, every teacher in grades K through 3 will become a
reading specialist using alternate methods of instruction.
Very few
instructors have the skill, knowledge or expertise to teach at-risk
readers. That is because colleges and universities do not train
Elementary Education majors to teach reading to students who need
alternate methods of instruction. However, once a teacher is fully
trained in the EDNA reading program, every disabled reader in her/his class will
learn to read.
Customization of the program is based on
the demographic make-up of the class and the size of the school. From
this valuable information, the types and amounts of books and materials
needed for each individual school will be selected.
The teachers will be provided with
everything they need to teach the EDNA reading program over the course of the
school year, including books, lesson plans, and teaching materials.
