The
Mission of the EDNA Reading Programs
Reading is the most
important academic skill taught; all other subjects are dependent on
it. Reading opens up a whole new world for children... one that is
filled with fun, excitement, promise, and hope for the future. On the
other hand, when a child does not understand traditional reading
instruction, the road to reading can become an impossible, frustrating
journey that seems forever out of reach.
As elementary school
educators, our most important goal is to teach children to read. Next,
and equally as important, is to teach them to read early before they
begin to falter and 'slip through the cracks'.
The effects of reading
deficiency on children, adolescents and eventually adults, are
significant, profound...
85% of all
juvenile offenders have problems reading;¹
60% of America's
prison inmates are illiterate;²
75% of
unemployed adults have reading and writing difficulties.³
This problem is not a result
of poor reading curriculums or inadequate classroom instruction.
Rather, the fact is more than 30% of children need an alternate method
of reading instruction. The standard methods taught in today's
classrooms simply do not work for this ever-growing segment of at-risk
readers.
There is an effective
solution: EDNA, Early Detection Necessary Action, an innovative reading
program for at-risk children developed by renowned reading expert Edna
Goble.
"Putting reading within
reach" is the founding and guiding mission of EDNA. The results of the
program are dramatic: thousands of former at-risk readers have overcome
their reading deficiencies and are now able to read at grade level
because of EDNA. Further, the program guarantees that every at-risk
child in grades K through 3 will learn to read.
