Teaching
Phonics
In a Balanced Reading
Program
Teaching
Phonics in a Balanced Reading Program helps children master
phonics skills early, an important first step in unlocking the
mysterious, magical world of reading.
Teaching phonics is a
critical first step in putting reading within reach for all children.
However, not all phonics programs are the same and some can even hinder
the reading process.
Teaching Phonics in a Balanced Reading Program is an innovative
program developed by renowned reading expert Edna Goble. The most
effective elements found in traditional systematic, direct and explicit
phonics programs come together to form the foundation for
Teaching Phonics in a Balanced Reading Program.
Teaching
Phonics in a Balanced Reading Program...
Is completely
self-contained and includes all teacher and student support materials
necessary for proper, successful instruction.
Uses meaning in
the form of picture cues and actual books to help children decode.
Provides
immediate feedback to teachers to ensure that all children are learning
the program.
Includes
extra-practice support materials for students who require additional
instruction (can be self-taught).
Is organized by
grade level. Programs are available for kindergarten, first grade and
second grade instruction.
An accelerated
phonics program for higher grade levels is also available which teaches
decoding skills to help students segment and read multi-syllable words.
Is designed to
work in conjunction with a school's existing basal or whole language
program.
Teacher
Support Materials
Teaching
Phonics in a Balanced Reading Program
uses direct instruction. The program is set
up so that teachers are able to directly teach the program to children,
rather than using the random approach to discovery.
Teaching
Phonics in a Balanced Reading Program
is completely self contained and easy to
implement. Teachers are provided with all of the resource materials
they will need to teach the program. In addition, multiple copies of
all children's practice materials are included to help minimize cutting,
copying, and pasting tasks.
A comprehensive Teacher
Handbook has a scripted lesson plan in sequential, systematic order.
Each plan has direct instruction, directed practice, independent
practice and practice skills which involve actual reading and writing
practice. Full sized posters complement and provide visual
reinforcement to the verbal instruction.
Letters
and Visual Cues
Teaching
Phonics in a Balanced Reading Program
is highly visual. For every letter, there
is a visual configuration lesson. Students are given ample opportunity
to sort and match which helps build a strong phonics base.
Building
a Vocabulary
Pink and blue cards help
students expand their phonics skills and sight words by building words.
Advanced yellow instruction cards help children understand compound
words.
Student
Materials
Black and
white practice materials keep students' attention focused on the
specific phonics task at hand. A number of different student support
materials are included: One card for each letter of the alphabet with
five picture cue cards; blends and diagraphs cards with five key picture
cue cards; student books for each letter for each child (reproducible);
Elkonin Boxes which build segmenting skills, and others.
